Authorization and Licensing

Under the PNRA Ordinance, all nuclear installations, radiation facilities, nuclear safety class equipment manufacturers, service providers who are providing services to nuclear and radiation facilities and importers of radioactive materials in the country are required to obtain licence or authorization from PNRA.

PNRA has notified licensing processes for various types of installations and facilities. These processes are based on extensive review of licensing submissions and regulatory inspections. PNRA also certifies specially designed casks for transport and storage of spent nuclear fuel. Furthermore, PNRA issues licences to operating personnel of nuclear power plants and research reactors to ensure that only qualified and trained personnel operate these installations.

These licensing processes aim to ensure that the facility or activity for which the licence is required would not be hazardous to the workers, the public and the environment.

In addition, PNRA issues No Objection Certificates (NOCs) and permits for import and export of nuclear material, radiation sources and for transportation of radioactive materials.
