IAEA-PNRA Workshop on “Characterization and Quantitative Classification of Radioactive Waste, Review and Approval of Waste Acceptance Criteria”, (20-24 April, 2026), PNRA HQs Islamabad

Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) hosted a “National Workshop Characterization and Quantitative Classification of Radioactive Waste, Review and Approval of Waste Acceptance Criteria” in collaboration with International Atomic Energy Commission (IAEA) from 20-24 April, 2026 at PNRA HQs Islamabad, Pakistan. The workshop was intended to enhance the understanding of the operators and regulators in the areas of radioactive waste characterization and quantitative classification, applicable standards, international practices and review and approval of Waste Acceptance Criteria.

IAEA experts Ms. Latife Ozge Unver, Mr. Sandi VRISEK and Mr. Andrey Guskov participated as international resource persons during the workshop.

Mr. Shahid Rashid, Member (Executive), PNRA inaugurated the workshop. During his inaugural address he emphasized on the importance of radioactive waste characterization and quantitative classification as integral part of over radioactive waste management. He further highlighted, role of regulator to perform effective review of waste acceptance criteria based on national and international requirements and its subsequent approval.

Radioactive waste is generated from nuclear power plants, research reactors, fuel cycle operations (mining, refining), industrial applications, radiation facilities, and research & development etc. considering impact and importance of radioactive waste in long term for future generations, he further emphasized that understanding, operational practices and robust regulatory framework we can develop targeted strategies to manage radioactive waste responsibly and effectively.

The workshop was attended by the participants from operators and regulators. The workshop remained very beneficial for developing understanding of the participants on the subject matter through oral presentations and interactive sessions.
