The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), conducted a four-weeks IAEA flagship Basic Professional Training Course (BPTC) on nuclear safety of Nuclear Power Plants from March 30 to April 24, 2026 at PNRA HQs, Islamabad. The course was aimed at enhancing the technical competencies and practical capabilities of safety professionals in the field of nuclear safety.
IAEA BPTC training program provided a comprehensive understanding of nuclear safety principles and their application in safe use of nuclear energy for the socioeconomic development of society. The IAEA experts and participants from 16 countries attended the training course, reflecting broad international participation. The event brought together regulators, technical experts, and academia, and underscores Pakistan's growing role of international cooperation in promoting nuclear safety & radiation protection.
During the closing ceremony, Mr. Ugur Bezdegumeli, IAEA Nuclear Safety Officer and expert highlighted the significance of PNRA's experience and practices for learning of embarking countries. Mr. Zia Hussain Shah, Chairman PNRA, congratulated the participants on successful completion of the course during the hospitality event, urged participants to apply the knowledge gained in their respective fields and concluded the course on emphasizing the need of international cooperation for nuclear safety regime. He further mentioned that PNRA is willing to provide support to embarking countries in the development of their regulatory infrastructure and framework as well.
